Lighter than Air

These aircraft achieve flight by utilizing gases lighter than air, such as helium or hot air to generate lift. This category includes two types:

  • Airships: Also referred to as dirigibles these elongated balloons have gasbags filled with helium and are propelled by engines. While they were once popular for passenger transport they are now primarily utilized in advertising, research and tourism.
  • Balloons: These traditional flying machines come in forms. They range from the hot air balloons that ascend through heated air generated by a burner to more advanced gas balloons that rely on helium, for lift.

Delving Deeper: Subcategories and Categorizations

In each category there are additional subcategories and classifications based on different factors. These include:

  • Number of engines: engine, twin engine, multi engine
  • Takeoff and landing capabilities: Landplane, seaplane, amphibian
  • Purpose: Passenger aircraft, cargo aircraft, military aircraft, recreational aircraft

These classifications help us comprehend the specific abilities and limitations of various aircraft types. This understanding enables efficient operation within the airspace.
