Aircraft Mechanic – Unlicensed Technicians – Essential Duties

Aircraft Mechanics Technicians (AMTs) are the often-overlooked heroes of the aviation industry. These skilled experts do not hold an FAA A&P license, yet still play a crucial role in guaranteeing the safety and dependability of every flight by meticulously maintaining and fixing intricate aircraft systems. Then traditionally work alongside or under the supervision of a licensed professional.

Responsibilities carried out by an AMT:

Inspections-

  • AMTs conduct thorough inspections on aircraft adhering to strict guidelines established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
  • They diligently examine every part of the aircraft from its wings and fuselage to its engines and landing gear carefully looking for any indications of wear, damage, or malfunction.

Maintenance-

  • AMTs perform maintenance tasks to ensure that aircraft remain in optimal condition. This includes activities such, as filter changes, lubrication of moving parts and replacement of worn-out components.
  • They also carry out scheduled maintenance checks by following checklists and manuals to verify that all systems are operating correctly.

Troubleshooting and Repair-

  • When an aircraft encounters a problem, it is the responsibility of an AMT to identify the issue accurately and proceed with repairs.
  • AMTs leverage their knowledge of aircraft systems and their sharp troubleshooting abilities to identify the root cause of issues whether they stem from mechanical or electrical failures.
  • Once the problem has been diagnosed AMTs carry out the repairs using specialized tools and techniques to restore the aircrafts airworthiness.

Documentation-

These examples are typically finalized and recorded by the licensed A&P

  • Every inspection, maintenance task and repair must be meticulously recorded by AMTs.
  • They maintain records of all performed work, which play a critical role in ensuring the safety and traceability of the aircraft’s maintenance history.

Staying Up to Date-

  • Given that the aviation industry’s continuously evolving it is imperative for AMTs to remain up to speed with the latest technological advancements and regulatory changes.
  • They regularly participate in training courses and workshops to equip themselves with the skills and knowledge needed for maintaining contemporary aircraft.

Qualities of a Successful AMT:

  • Unwavering attention to detail- In aviation minor errors can result in catastrophic consequences, therefore AMTs must exhibit meticulousness and a strong attention to details.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities: Troubleshooting aircraft systems necessitates the use of analytical thinking and critical reasoning skills.
  • Skillful manual dexterity- AMTs possess adeptness in handling various tools and equipment showcasing their proficiency in manual tasks.
  • Effective communication skills- Close collaboration with pilots, inspectors and other maintenance personnel requires the ability to communicate efficiently.
